Distinguished and Famous people from Wilsons Prom Region

🌿 James Andrew Kershaw

James Andrew Kershaw helped secure protection for Wilsons Promontory and served as secretary of its management committee from 1908 until his death in 1946. A zoologist and museum director, he brought extensive natural-history experience to the responsibility. Surviving correspondence records the less romantic side of conservation: appointing rangers, issuing permits, managing access and dealing with finances and introduced animals. The long service mattered because declaring a park was only the beginning. Making protection work required years of decisions, letters and practical organisation, much of it conducted through his office.

🥾 Bill Cripps

Bill Cripps knew the Promontory's coast through fishing before becoming a ranger in 1912. He had already helped cut the difficult track from Tidal River to Sealers Cove. Ranger work added bridges, patrol routes, buildings and transport to an already practical knowledge of the country. Boats were essential for bringing supplies and visitors, and he later operated the park's motorboat Jessie. The history gives conservation a very physical form: paths had to be cut, materials delivered and engines persuaded to cooperate before visitors could enjoy the scenery.

📷 Baldwin Spencer

Baldwin Spencer supported the campaign to reserve Wilsons Promontory and became chairman of its management committee in 1908. His involvement also left a visual record: photographs held by Museums Victoria document the park during its early years of formal management. One shows the perimeter gates and fence around 1910, a modest subject that records how protection was being translated into boundaries and daily administration. His connection is sustained conservation work and documentation. The photographs let later viewers look past today's familiar visitor landscape to the practical beginnings of park management.
